Termites or Ants?

One of the problems a Maryland homeowner may face are pest infestations.   You may find damaged woods, see swarms of flying insects or even find a small pile of fine, sawdust like shavings.     Confronted with this evidence, most people immediately think, TERMITES!

Actually we find that more often than not this damage is caused by ants and not by termites.  Telling the difference between a termite or an ant may be difficult – but armed with a little bit of information, one can usually figure it out.

This is the best illustration I could find that clearly demonstrates the difference between an ant and a termite:

Often the first indication that one has a termite or ant problem is seeing the swarms of reproductive males and females that emerge in the spring.   It is not unusual for these swarms to erupt from a windowsill or other parts of a home.    Other evidence may be small piles of sawdust (ants) or mud like tunnels (termites).
